Random writing about writing Wednesday-Right Brain Left Brain

Here is my disclaimer for this post.  I'm sick and my brain might spout things that don't make sense.  It happens.

Being awake all night long with sick kids wasn't exactly the best idea.  Now I'm sick.  Ugh, and I think it's the flu!  Guess I should've tried to get a shot earlier.  Anyway, you might be wondering what all this has to do with the left brain right brain.  Did you know that it takes one side of the brain to write and the other side to edit?  Well, I've learned in the past that it doesn't take much to distract my creative side.  When I write, I have to have it absolutely quiet.  My husband can be in the room, but he can't be making any noise.  I won't even let him talk on the phone.  That's why I usually only write late at night when everyone is sleeping.

I found out last night that I can't write when I'm sick either.  I thought, "Oh great, since I can't do anything else, I'll just sit and write, right?"  WRONG!  My head wasn't working.  It doesn't help that I have to sit at a desk (wishing I had a laptop), but my brain was stuck.  Instead, I opened a few things to critique and discovered that the other side of my brain is fine with sickness.  In fact, I can critique with pretty much anything going on, my husband can watch a movie or my kids can be screaming in the background.  I wish it was the other way around so I could write more often, but it isn't.

How is it for you?  Is your brain picky?

  1. I find that the ebb and flow of my work has to do more with where I'm at with my story than with my physical state.

But now that I think of it, stress about household/family things can slow me down even when the story is going well.

  2. I agree Jennifer, it's much easier to write some parts of my book rather than others. Sometimes I sit there and dig for anything to write and other times it just flows for hours!

  3. I'm like you-- I can't write distracted, but I can edit distracted. And I'm sorry you're sick! :(

  4. My brain likes to procrastinate while editing ...
