Basic Book Review--TWO BOOKS IN ONE REVIEW!

I have recently read the first two books in the Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa.

The first is called The Iron King.
The Iron King (Iron Fey, #1)

Here is the goodreads jacket flap version.

Meghan Chase has never fit in at her small-town high school, and now, on the eve of her 16th birthday, she discovers why. When her half brother is kidnapped, Meghan is drawn into a fantastical world she never imagined--the world of Faery, where anything you see may try to eat you, and Meghan is the daughter of the summer faery king. Now she will journey into the depths of Faery to face an unknown enemy . . . and beg the help of a winter prince who might as soon kill her as let her touch his icy heart. The Iron King is the first book in the Iron Fey series.

In movie ratings I give it a PG-13 for some violence and language (not a big fan of the 'f' word, ever).
As far as the stars go for this first book I'd have to say that the beginning gets a and the rest of the book gets a .
So, I guess all around it would mean .
I have to tell you that I just wasn't feeling it in the beginning.  In fact, I actually put the book down for good at one point only to have my friend tell me it gets better and that the second book made it all worth it.  I hesitated to pick it back up, but I'm glad that I did.  The pace picked up and the story got more complex.

The second book, The Iron Daughter,The Iron Daughter (Iron Fey, #2) gets the same PG-13 movie rating (on a softer leaning toward PG level) but I'm going to give it

The goodreads jacket flap version of this book is

Half Summer faery princess, half human, Meghan has never fit in anywhere. Deserted by the Winter prince she thought loved her, she is prisoner to the Winter faery queen. As war looms between Summer and Winter, Meghan knows that the real danger comes from the Iron Fey, iron-bound faeries that only she and her absent prince have seen. But no one believes her. Worse, Meghan's own fey powers have been cut off. She's alone in Faery with only her wits for help. Trusting anyone would be foolish. Trusting a seeming traitor could be deadly. But even as she grows a backbone of iron, Meghan can't help but hear the whispers of longing in her all-too-human heart.

The story developed to a different level in this book.  The character's came alive and the pace zoomed me through the book.  Unfortunately, that was the one thing I didn't love.  I never thought I'd say this, but the pace went a little too fast for me.  I just felt like there were too many times that too much was thrown in too fast.

I have to add that I absolutely love the book cover's and I can't wait for the third book, The Iron Queen, to come out on February 1st.  I should also tell you that there's an Iron Fey 1.5 called, Winter's Passage, which I haven't read yet.

What about you, have you read these?

  1. I've been thinking about starting this series, but have refrained. I think I might give it a try now (If I can get through the first bit - I'm horrible at keeping with books if I want to put them down)

  2. I had never heard of these books until I was in Wal-Mart today and I saw them on the shelf. I considered buying them but I didn't know what order they went in so I refrained. Now it might be even longer before I buy one.
